I forum di discussione sono dei punti di incontro in rete nei quali gli utenti di internet, attraverso l'inserimento di messaggi in successione, possono discutere di vari argomenti, leggendo le opinioni altrui e intervenendo per esprimere le proprie.
Partecipare alla discussione su un argomento che ci interessa potrebbe risultare un'ottima fonte di informazioni e di nuove idee (se si ha ad esempio un dubbio specifico su un argomento basta inserire un quesito nella relativa sezione del forum e attendere che o il Moderatore o qualche navigatore lo raccolga esprimendo la sua opinione in merito).
Partecipare ad un forum di discussione è senza dubbio divertente.
Da un punto di vista "storico" i forum derivano direttamente dalle BBS (Bulletin Board System): banche dati, in genere di carattere amatoriale, che hanno per molti versi aperto la strada all'avvento di internet.
La prima venne realizzata nel 1978 da Ward Christensen e Randy Suess.
Tramite le BBS, a suo tempo gestite da appassionati capaci di lavorarci sfruttando ogni briciola di tempo libero, era possibile fruire di servizi come la posta elettronica, il download di file shareware e freeware, a volte le chat in tempo reale e, naturalmente, i forum.
La differenza più consistente delle BBS rispetto ad internet era (ed è ancora) questa: per collegarsi alla BBS che ci interessa è necessario comporre il numero telefonico del computer del gestore, vale a dire che nel caso questi non si trovi nella città del chiamante è necessaria una telefonata interurbana (o peggio).
Esiste una rete, Fidonet, che collega BBS di tutto il mondo e consente di fruire gratuitamente di alcuni servizi chiamando un nodo locale.
In realtà le BBS oggi sono poco più che un passatempo per appassionati, anche perché molte delle energie e delle iniziative nate all'interno di questi sistemi si sono trasferiti direttamente su internet, più facile da utilizzare e diffusa universalmente.
I forum veri e propri sono delle pagine web a tutti gli effetti e la loro collocazione più tipica è proprio all'interno dei siti web che utilizzano i forum come strumenti di comunità.
Come ormai ogni webmaster sa bene organizzare e gestire una comunità, la più ampia e "affezionata" possibile, è un'esigenza vitale per qualunque sito che ambisca ad andare un po' più in là della pura funzione domestica.
Bene, pochi strumenti, o forse nessuno, hanno le stesse potenzialità dei forum nel caso si voglia creare una comunità web.


Difatti i forum:


danno la sensazione di un luogo specifico
i forum possono essere, e spessissimo sono, integrati direttamente all'interno di un sito web.
Questa caratteristica contribuisce in maniera rilevante a creare, fra persone geograficamente distanti, quella sensazione di appartenenza che è il sale di ogni comunità;


offrono un contesto visibile alla conversazione
i forum forniscono immediatamente il contesto di ogni discussione, favorendo in questo modo l'inserimento dei nuovi arrivati che possono rapidamente rendersi conto sia dell'argomento oggetto del dibattito sia delle opinioni espresse in proposito;


incoraggiano diramazioni e sottogruppi
all'interno del tema principale esistono sempre sottotemi specifici, singoli problemi intorno ai quali tutti gli iscritti possono confrontarsi e discutere. Ciò consente a comunità anche molto numerose di frazionarsi in maniera naturale, rendendo più semplice la gestione dell'intera comunità;


tengono traccia della storia della comunità
in genere i software o i servizi online per la gestione dei forum consentono di archiviare tutti i messaggi inseriti, altri invece cancellano i messaggi anteriori a una certa data.
Conservare i testi in archivio è di fatto una delle funzioni più utili e questo almeno per due ragioni: la prima è che si può avere costantemente presente tutta la storia della comunità studiando i suoi interessi e la sua evoluzione nel tempo; la seconda è che curiosando qua e là i nuovi arrivati possono rendersi rapidamente conto di come funzioni il posto in cui sono capitati.


Riassumendo, i forum sono strumenti utilissimi per chiunque voglia creare un qualche tipo di comunità online.
Tramite le bacheche elettroniche è infatti possibile porre domande e ottenere risposte, incoraggiare conversazioni approfondite, gestire conversazioni ad alto volume di traffico senza rischiare di perdere il controllo o di ingolfare alcunché, fornire contesto, storia e senso del luogo.



Come si utilizza un forum di discussione ?

Quando un utente accede ad un forum, trova l'elenco degli interventi precedenti che può leggere, stampare, conservare.
Per intervenire a sua volta invia un messaggio con un meccanismo molto semplice, simile a quello della e-mail.
La responsabilità del contenuto dei messaggi pubblicati nei forum è dell'autore.

I messaggi sono controllati da qualcuno prima di essere messi nel forum ?

Dipende dal forum.
Se il forum è Moderato ("Moderated Forum") il vostro messaggio non viene visualizzato subito ma prima viene controllato da un Moderatore.
Il nostro forum non è Moderato: in questo caso si dice "Aperto" ("Open"), perché ogni messaggio inviato viene automaticamente pubblicato.
